Nicely crafted, Kandace. Often stories about the U.P. devolve into clownish tales about Yooper schtick. In contrast, you are a writer and a story teller, and as someone who moved to the U.P. 40+ years ago, I appreciate that you’ve told your story in your way, not needing to rely on the easy stereotypes and tropes that might otherwise be associated with the greater McMillan and Newberry metro areas. Well done, I really enjoyed your piece.

Great story..I grew up 20 miles south of Newberry…My Grampa’s car was a huge Buick…he borrowed it out to us…just needed to fill it up and wash it…

When visiting Northernmost Cape ~ Harbor Springs, Mackinaw City, Cheboygan, Petoskey ~ don’t miss the large antique district and Historic depot museum in Pellston. Step back in time and take a stroll along the maple river which was once the center of a huge logging empire. 20 minutes from anywhere, Pellston is a great place to visit and enjoy the day.

I am a sorry but the TC Film Festival does not need to be rewarding for not even attempting to do anything in the last 2 and half years. Especially when so many deserving events have worked hard to make in happen in 2021 and support their communities.

The cherry festival brings wonderful memories. I remember going for years and years. It was like coming “home“ for me. My mom and grandparents lived in Traverse City and the whole week was nothing but fun enjoy. Smiles and laughter. This article was fantastic at filling in the blanks about how the whole thing started. Thank you for helping to close a circle regarding history. Looking forward to the next time we are able to come.
